Learn about the pistol shrimp
Pistol (snapping) shrimp are the family Alpheidae — around 620 species, mostly living in tropical and temperate coastal waters on coral reefs, seagrass flats and oyster reefs. Their oversized claw snaps shut so hard it fires a cavitation bubble; the snap reaches ~218 decibels, among the loudest sounds in the sea, and even flashes faint light as the bubble collapses. Many share a burrow with a goby fish — the shrimp digs, the goby watches for danger.
